Yoga for Children with Special Needs – January 17 to February 21, 2012

This class is suitable for higher functioning children with special needs who are physically able. This includes, but is not limited to, children with Autism, ADD/ADHD, Language-based Learning Disabilities, Apraxia and mild Cerebral Palsy.

Classes will introduce children to yoga poses and breathing exercises through music, songs and games appropriate to their age and/or developmental level. Yoga poses will focus on building core strength, increasing awareness of breath, practicing balance, mindfulness and coordinated movement. Breathing exercises target relaxation, self-regulation and attention.

Classes will incorporate Receptive Language skills: following sequential directions and responding to questions with visual supports; concepts of space, time and quantity, i.e., in, under, over, before, after, first, next, last, more; Pragmatic Language skills: turn-taking, socializing in a group; asking questions, storytelling skills, collaborative pair/group work; Speech through singing and focusing on sounds, and Play skills: pretend play, role playing and encouraging creativity. But all the kids will know is that doing yoga is fun!

DATES: Tuesdays, January 17 to February 21, 2012 (6 classes)
LOCATION: Santosha Westboro studio
TIME: 5-6 yr olds 3-3:30 p.m.; 7-8 yr olds 4-4:30 p.m.; 9-10 yr olds 5-5:30 p.m.
